English Premier League – Chelsea vs Liverpool
Stamford Bridge – September 20
The second week of the EPL offers up a tasty fixture as Champions Liverpool travel to new-look Chelsea.
Having heavily invested in their squad in the summer transfer window, Chelsea comes into this with a lot of expectations. It might just be too early in the season to truly see how good their side could be, but striker Timo Werner already looked impressive on his debut last week.
Their biggest signing Havertz looked underwhelming at times, and it’ll be interesting to see if he starts this one, or stays on the bench. The player undoubtedly has a lot of talent, but he was played out of position last week and it’s still too early to really see the best of him.
Other new signings Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, and Ben Chilwell won’t be ready for action yet, neither is last season’s star player Christian Pulisic.
Without these players available, Chelsea does still has a chance of getting a result as Leeds showed last week that Liverpool can be vulnerable at times.
A hat-trick for Mo Salah last week will give him a lot of confidence coming into this one. Defensively, Chelsea is weak and without Silva ready to play, they do have mistakes in them. Goalkeeper Kepa was under fire again, after conceding a soft goal from outside the area last week, and if he or the defense isn’t at it, they will be leaking goals again.
Liverpool will be looking to be stronger at the back after a couple of mistakes led to Leeds scoring 3 against them, and Chelsea does have attacking talent that could cause problems.
With the addition of Thiago from Bayern added to their ranks, though it’ll likely be too early to see him start for this one, it should mean that Liverpool’s midfield will have to play at their very best if they are to keep their place in the team.
Another exciting game for the Champions that could offer up a lot of goals again after the Leeds encounter, with both teams being very attack-minded in their approach to most games.
Possible Wager
Odds: 5.00 or 4/1
1st Goalscorer: Mohamed Salah¹
After a hat-trick in the first week, this bet looks a solid option to me. The odds are far too big for a player of his quality and could easily land. He takes the penalties too, which has a real possibility of happening in this game given who Chelsea will play at the back with a lot of key players missing.
Prediction
Odds: 2.21 or 121/100
Liverpool To Win
It’s a simple bet that I feel will come in. Chelsea at the moment doesn’t look like the greatest team with a lot of their players still absent in this fixture, and with Liverpool basically at full strength, it should be an away victory for the title holders.
Liverpool won’t be as sloppy as last week defensively because their current defense is too good. Chelsea’s on the other hand, isn’t that great at the best of times.
They leaked goals last season, and with Kepa in goal, this should be a Liverpool win.
I bet on Stake.com (x2.21) for Liverpool to win.
