English Premier League: Liverpool vs Man City – Anfield

Sunday is a must-win for Liverpool if they want to keep their challenge for the title up.

They’re at home against a Man City team that sits top of the league and looking unbeatable, while Liverpool’s form has slipped dramatically in recent weeks, with injuries being key to their current situation.

Liverpool is without three of their top center backs again, as Joel Matip was the latest to be ruled out for the rest of the season, along with Gomez and van Dijk.

It’s been a tough season for them with injuries, but even more recently as they’ve now had back-to-back defeats at home against Burnley and Brighton. Man City probably isn’t the team Klopp wants to see coming to Anfield at the moment, but on the other hand, if Liverpool can play how we know they can play, even without some key players, they should be able to challenge Man City.

It’s been a strange one for Liverpool as they looked powerful in the first half of the season, but it’s tailored off now, and if they fail to win here, they will effectively be out of the running as they’ll likely be 10 points behind with City still having a game in hand. Salah has been the only good thing this season for Liverpool, as he is still scoring goals, but the team has a lot of questions surrounding it at the minute due to defeats against lesser opposition that should be comfortable wins.

It’ll be interesting to see if Liverpool can get up for this and what type of Liverpool team show up, as they haven’t shown up recently. It’s rumored that Fabinho is to return[1] at center-back with club captain Jordan Henderson, but it will be a tough test whoever they choose to go with.

Man City are currently the best team in the league, arguably the best team in the world with their current form, but this will be Pep’s toughest test for a while, albeit against a weakened Liverpool team.

Liverpool still have quality and can be dangerous, and City themselves have been without key players such as De Bruyne and Aguero, but they’ve still managed to go on a terrific run of form. The form that’s seen them unbeaten since the end of November 2020. They deserve the credit they’ve received during the run and largely a lot of credit goes to the center-back pairing of Ruben Dias and John Stones.

City has conceded only 13 goals in the league so far this season and they did the correct thing and went out and got a center-back in the Summer window, while Liverpool is now suffering due to not bringing in anyone until the last day of January transfer window, with both central defenders seeming like panic buys.

Man City should be confident they can come here and get all three points against a struggling Liverpool, and that’s exactly what they believe they can do.

Prediction: Man City To Win

It’s hard to back against City winning here due to their form, and also given that Liverpool is in a weird place at the minute. Liverpool’s last two games at Anfield have been defeats, something that hasn’t occurred since 2012, and now they have to bounce back against the toughest opponent in the league, and I can’t see how they can possibly do that.

Man City don’t let in goals, and they control games and score freely. It could be a long night for Liverpool in a must-win game for them that could potentially see Man City pick them apart with ease.
