The Champions League makes a long-awaited return this Friday following an unprecedented delay due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The tournament was ground to a halt after an initial batch of second-round games had been played back in March. Atalanta, Paris St. Germain, RB Leipzig, and Atletico Madrid have all made safely through to the quarter-finals whilst Barcelona, Napoli, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Lyon, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea must all play their second leg to secure their hopes of a European title this season. The remainder of the competition is to be played over a 20-day period leaving joy on the faces of European football fans.
Manchester City vs Real Madrid
Prediction: Man City Qualifies
Pep Guardiola’s men will host Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium this Friday where they must protect their 2-1 lead if they hope to secure their first-ever European trophy. Real Madrid will be looking to turn over the deficit with help from Champions League maestro Zinedine Zidane who won the trophy three years on the trot from 2016 to 2018. Real Madrid and Manchester City both come into this game in fine form. Real Madrid will be jubilant with a La Liga Championship added to their vast collection after toppling the mighty Barcelona. Further up north, Manchester City ended the city with impeccable form and scoring for fun. There’s no question that both managers of these teams, who are regarded as two of the best in the world, will do everything they can to book their quarter-final spot. With Manchester City playing at home and Real Madrid missing the likes of Marcelo and Sergio Ramos, they may be hard-fought in this game. Pep has had his mind on the Champions League since they fell behind in the Premier League and there’s no doubt that their player will be highly motivated for this tie.
Barcelona vs Napoli
Prediction: Barcelona Wins
Barcelona will host Napoli in their second leg tie following a disappointing end to their league season. Napoli only managed a seven placed finish in Serie A meaning they will not compete in Europe next season unless they pull off a miracle and win the Champions League itself. Their first leg was tightly contested and ended in a 1-1 draw giving both teams hope of reaching the next round. Barcelona are typically weak when playing away in European competition although I am confident that will progress when they face Napoli at the Camp Nou this weekend. Despite missing players like Luis Suarez, Arturo Vidal and Sergio Busquets through injury and suspension, I believe they have enough strength to keep the ball and allow Messi to run the game for them. Napoli will have to do without key player Fernando Llorente and will be without Amin Younes and Faouzi Ghoulam who are not eligible. Both sides have their weaknesses and I think it could be a high scoring game with both sides making the scoresheet. However, as on a number of occasions, Lionel Messi will be the difference maker in a competition that he wants so badly to win again.
